Job Description

JD - Team Leader - Building Control

You will assist the Regulatory Services Manager with mentoring, coordination, and oversight of the Building Control Team, supporting a collaborative, proactive, and high-performing team environment.

This position can be based in either Cromwell or Alexandra, offering flexibility within a modern and digitally enabled workplace.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day coordination, mentoring, and technical leadership to the Building Control team.
  • Assisting the Regulatory Services Manager in achieving compliance and performance goals.
  • Promote efficiency, innovation, and customer-focused practices across all Building Control functions.
  • Contribute to accreditation and support continuous improvements in system, process, and staff capability.
  • Champion Council’s health and safety practices and promote a culture of wellbeing and mutual respect.

Desired Skills and Experience

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • A professional qualification in the building industry that meets Regulation 18 under the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in building control, with competencies in Residential 1–3 and Commercial 1–2 processing and inspections.
  • Strong knowledge of the Building Act 2004, NZ Building Code, and relevant territorial authority legislation.
  • Proven leadership, mentoring, and dispute resolution skills with the ability to guide and develop others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report preparation and customer correspondence.
  • Strong computer literacy and familiarity with digital consenting systems.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • A valid New Zealand driver’s licence.
